Berserk Mutant
A very special thanks to Sebastian Archer for contributing to our site. Sebastian has won four 1st Place Golden Demons since 2005 and his work is an inspiration to painters all over the world.
Aaahh mutants, you can never have too many! Remind me to do another mutant soon. I had been getting ideas from looking at many of Allan Carrasco's fantastic mutants and strange chaos conversions, and I had various interesting spare components lying around on my desk, and this is the result. I wanted to try a new metallics technique, similar to that used by Allan C and Cyril Abati, and this ended up being the prototype.
After base coating all the metal areas with mithril silver, I applied many successive layers of very thin and watery paint, starting with a quite light yellowish colour, then progressing through darker orange and red-brown until almost reaching black, and concentrating more and more on the recesses/shadowed parts as I went. The paint was so thin that it only showed up after 2 or 3 coats, so the colour gradually built up the more layers I used. At the end I went back and re-highlighted with mithril, and also did some random scratchy textures over the flatter areas - in hindsight this may have been a mistake, as areas left smooth generally look better with this technique.
